The genre of science fiction and film (SF) has acquired cultural momentum in the past few decades, rising at it is from being a kind of pastime popular cultural form to one of the most influential literary/cultural genre in the current literary/cultural scene. SF often features far-fetched imagination combined with practical concerns that address contemporary critical issues, such as the influence of modern technology on human society (posthumanism, A. I., Big Data, etc.), the continuing exploitation of late capitalism and its complicity with the state apparatus (technocratic nationalism, bio-genetic capitalism, etc.), the threatening of nuclear weapons, the invasion of Others (alien invasion), and the termination of the world and its aftermath (Anthropocene, post/apocalypse, post-anthropocentrism etc.). This course offers to look into how these SF works have shed light on the critical issues in our contemporary globalized society with trenchant critiques: these imaginings and comments not only chart the roads that we have travelled, but may also lead us to an elsewhere that is full of potentialities, transversalties, and becomings.
